Rough Translation: Love is an investigation of the nuances in how the concept of love is perceived, expressed and understood among a variety of languages and cultures. Immigrant adult students at an ESL school in Los Angeles were posed a simple question: What words or phrases express love in your language?

All the responses were put together in a small book to share these perspectives of love. The book contains more than 50 responses in over 30 different languages in everyone’s own handwriting, and includes some beautiful and unique languages such as Kyrgyz, Mongolian, and Malagasy, to name a few.

Each book is hand bound with a unique flower sticker on the cover of each one and a folded letter sized poster with all phrases contained in the book.
